When Was My Ruger Made? By Boge Quinn. August 13th, 2003. We gets lots of questions about old Rugers. It should be fairly obvious to our readers by now that we are great fans of William B. Ruger and his fine firearms, so lots of folks must figure we're the guys to ask about that Old Model Super Blackhawk from the pawn shop or dad's old Bearcat. The most common question we are asked is 'When. Hey guys, I wanted to ask regarding serial number placement. I am looking to purchase a ruger MK II, I notice that the serial number is only on top of the receiver from pictures. A '72' serial number prefix could be from 1976 or 1977. The 1977 production run of 77s started with 72-38101. You can find this information at www.ruger.com on the customer service tab under Instruction Manuals & Product History. Your Son's '77' prefix rifle was produced in 1983 or 1984.

Location: Benton City, WA | That is a great looking MKII! One of the great things about these is that they do seem to hit what they are pointed at! |

I wish I had followed Blackhawk's lead and kept mine. I hope to replace it and know that it will cost me more than the $197 I paid when I bought my Govt. Target model when they were first introduced in 1987. Blackhawk, are you sure you bought yours in 1984? I thought they were introduced in 1987 - I seem to recall running out and buying the first one I could find after reading an introductory article in one of the gun magazines. Love at first read ... maybe not. Thanks for the photo ... |

However, if it helps, my gun record book (one of the saddest books written as it contains a number of guns that I foolishly let 'get away') indicates that I bought mine on new 10-07-87. I seem to recall that they had been introduced shortly before then and I was quite taken by them - test target and all. My former Govt. Target Model's serial number was 210-264XX. The OTD cost (w/ MN tax and LEO discount) was $208.82. Again, it was purchased new. Actually, I purchased two of them. My brother, like you, wisely kept his. I sold mine for the princely sum of $265 to a friend on 10-02-01. Hope this helps ... Joe |

Joe[/QUOTE] I bought mine when I had a FFL and I believe I paid around $179 wholesale for it. I bought an additional magazine and the Ruger checkered walnut thumbrest grips when I ordered the pistol. |

Dear Xxx Xxxxxxxxx , Thank you for using the Ruger On-Line Customer Support Request Form. This e-mail is in response to your question or comment of 07/23/2010 Request No: 67440 Comment / question: My pistol is a MK678G Government Target with an A100 frame. Based on the MKII serial numbers listed on this site the S/N appears to be circa 1984. Several referances state that the MK678G did not go into production until 1986. Did the MK678G start production in 1984 as indicated by the S/N or are these S/n's out of sequience? When was my gun built? Thank You... Response: The information you requested for the above serial number is as follows: Model: MK678GW Shipped: June of 1988 The Mark II pistol was introduce in 1982 and discontinued in 2004. The Mark II pistol was introduced in 1982 and discontinued in 2004. The serial numbers do not indicate the year or sequent any of our Ruger’s was made in. Please do not reply to this message. Sincerely, Ruger Firearms Additionally I found a picture of a U S marked MK678 and it's S/n prefix was 210. I sumise that the initial batch of MK678G's were a continuation of the Government contract run and used the 'leftover' receivers. I can't believe that this gun was a 'hot seller' so it probibly took a couple of years to use up those receivers. Also my grip frame is cearly marked A100... |
